U9's Match Reports

16 March 08 -  Mundford Vs Brandon

In their final league game of the season, the U9s looked to finish on a high note and began

confidently. Liam Aspin gave them the perfect start with a neat finish and soon after a vicious in swinging corner from John Pearce could only be parried in by the Brandon keeper. The away side began to get a foothold in the game and Ben Wells had to be smartly off his line to save at the feet of a Brandon forward. But despite this, strong defending from Dean Scott and Harry Walker meant Mundford went in 2-0 up. Once again Mundford started brightly and Ryan Harvey raced onto Joe Zipfells through ball to slot home. Once more Brandon showed their battling qualities and twice forced Wells into good saves, but it was Liam Aspin who finished the season in style with 2 quality finishes near the end.

Final Score Mundford 5 Brandon 0

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - BEN WELLS (Finished the season strongly, made the vital saves when his team mates needed him today)

9 March 08 -  Mundford Vs Harling

The boys produced a laboured effort against a hardworking Harling side who for a long time looked like sneaking a point. After an even start with both sides pushing for the opener, it eventually fell to Mundford when Harry Walker broke up an attack and fed Ryan Harvey who crashed home a cracker from the edge of the box. Harling came fighting back and deservedly levelled just before the break. In the second half Mundford stepped up a gear and really carved out some great chances. A John Pearce shot wide from close in, Ryan Harvey hit the bar with a header and Joe Zipfell headed just over. Time and time again John Pearce hit in some tremendous corners only for his teammates to be slow to react and it looked like it might cost them the 3 points as the Harling keeper was in inspired form. But 5 minutes from time a Sam Long effort was flicked home by Liam Aspin and almost right on time Harvey raced through to complete the scoring.

Final Score Mundford 3 Harling 1

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - LIAM ASPIN (Another vital goal)

2 March 08 -  Mundford Vs Wymondham

As has been the case in their 2 seasons of playing football, Mundford found Wymondham an extremely tough nut to crack. Knowing that a win would mean they had retained their league title crown, the boys playing with a strong wind at their backs probably had the bulk of the play, but found turning this into clear chances very difficult with really only a Liam Aspin effort that went just over causing the away keeper any real problems. This extremely tight game continued into the second half with both sides struggling to get the ball down and play any real constructive football. However, 5 minutes in an in swinging corner from Wymondham flew straight in to give them the lead. This rocked Mundford and some extremely frenetic action followed. Eventually the tireless work rate of John Pearce in midfield allowed the home side to push Wymondham back and a devastating run down the right from Ryan Harvey saw him pick out Liam Aspin who's shot was partially blocked by the keeper but it just squirmed over the line to an enormous cheer from the sidelines. The relief was extremely noticeable and the boys visibly relaxed and began to dominate and it was no surprise when the ball broke to Aspin who poked home the winner just before the end.

Final Score Mundford 2 Wymondham 1

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - LIAM ASPIN ("Just when we needed you most")

1 March 08 -  Mundford Vs Cringleford

The boys started their big double header weekend with an emphatic victory over a good Cringleford side. Kicking into a very strong wind, Mundford put together their best half of the season as their passing and moving was too much for the away side to handle. Liam Aspin and Ryan Harvey set the tone as they continually looked dangerous and it was no surprise when Harvey latched onto an Aspin through ball for the opening goal. Soon after it was Aspins turn to finish as Mundford continued their domination. Cringleford tried to get a foothold in the game but a tremendous pass from Sam Long sent Ryan Harvey away and he in turn set up Liam Aspin who rifled the ball home. With Dean Scott keeping things tight at the back and John Pearce rattling into tackles, it was still one way traffic and just before half time sub Joe Zipfell played a beautiful ball through for Harvey to slot home to complete an excellent half. It was no surprise that Cringleford would come out and show what a good side they are after the break and they forced the home side back for sustained periods but found keeper Ben Wells in unbeatable form with one instinctive save down to his left being the pick of his efforts. Mundford still showed a cutting edge on the break and Zipfell was denied by a tremendous save from the Cringleford keeper but it was left to Harry Walker to complete the scoring when he showed good anticipation to sneak in and slot home after an error at the back from Cringleford.

Final Score Mundford 5 Cringleford 0

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - LIAM ASPIN (Unstoppable in the first half)

24 Feb 08 -  Bulldogs Vs Mundford

The boys travelled to play Thetford Bulldogs, who seem to show massive improvement every time we play them. After a fairly even start, Bulldogs took the lead when Ben Wells was left exposed by some lack lustre defending. This fired Mundford up and they laid siege to the home goal and only some great defending and goalkeeping kept Mundford out. Liam Aspin then crashed the ball against the bar but eventually as so often has been the case this season, Ryan Harvey was on hand to finally level the scores just before half time. After the break with John Pearce taking control in midfield, Mundford began to dominate and Harvey turned just outside the box to drive the ball home. Soon after Sam Long sent Liam Aspin away and his driving run finished with a superb strike into the top corner. Luke DeMeyer, Harry Walker and Joe Ziphel came on to provide fresh impetus in the latter stages and Harvey collected his hat trick as he bundled the ball home from close range to complete the scoring.

Final Score Bulldogs 1 Mundford 4

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - JOHN PEARCE (Won the midfield battle)

17 Feb 08 -  Feltwell Vs Mundford

Mundford U9s put on a powerful performance away to a good Feltwell side. Straight from the off Mundford were on the front foot and after some near misses Liam Aspin showed great perseverance to keep the ball in play and his cross was finished by Ryan Harvey. Despite dominating the play it was still only 1-0 at the break. The second half saw Joe Ziphel and Harry Walker combining well to create a couple of chances but John Pearce`s driving runs down the right saw Feltwell being pushed back and eventually Ryan Harvey popped up for his second. Ben Wells had a relatively quiet time in goal thanks to the outstanding efforts of Dean Scott and Sam Long in front of him and near the end Liam Aspin grabbed the best goal of the game as a sharp break from Mundford saw Aspin lash the ball into the top corner of the net.

Final Score Feltwell 0 Mundford 3

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - RYAN HARVEY - (Vital goals)

10 Feb 08 -  Mundford Vs Litcham

Mundford U9s played some nice football in patches as they mostly dominated against a spirited Litcham side. Harry Walker was on hand to nudge home from close range as John Pearce`s corners caused Litcham endless problems. Liam Aspin showed good composure to continually get himself free and he grabbed a first half hat trick. Luke DeMeyer then got in on the act and grabbed a goal to cap a good performance from him. Sam Long then latched onto another Pearce corner to score with a terrific header but just before the break Litcham broke away but found Ben Wells in good form to leave it 6-0 at the break. The second half turned into the Ryan Harvey show as he displayed the massive improvement he has made this season as he grabbed 7 well taken goals and also showed great unselfish play to continually set up his team mates. A mazy dribble from the corner flag with a finish from a very acute angle and a neat header from a tremendous Liam Aspin cross were the pick of his goals. Harry Walker thumped home a pile driver for his second goal but then the Litcham keeper made a good save to deny Dean Scott from the penalty spot. Sam Long slid home his second and just before the end Dean Scott finally managed to finish one of the endless chances that his team mates had carved out for him.

Final Score Mundford 16 Litcham 0

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - Luke DeMeyer (Showing good progress)

27 Jan 08 -  Dereham Vs Mundford

Mundford U9s travelled to play Dereham and failed to cope with the home sides artificial pitch adequately enough to secure a win. They did however get the boost of a quick start as Ryan Harvey dribbled through to slot home the opener. Soon after they missed a glorious chance to go 2 up as Harveys precise pass found Sam Long who just shot wide. Dereham were proving a threat on the break and they capitalized on a mix up at the back to level the scores. Mundford hit straight back and Harvey lashed home a John Pearce corner but Mundford were finding it difficult to gain complete control and Ben Wells had to be alive to rush out and smother a couple of breakaways as the home sides keepers long goal kicks were causing problems, and just before the break Dereham levelled again with a good finish. The second half was very even and Mundford needed Dean Scott and Sam Long to keep things solid at the back but it was the home side who edged ahead with the aid of an own goal, however it was Harvey again who was on hand to equalize with another good finish. Chances were spurned at either end as both sides went in search of a winner and although a bit of a disappointing result for the boys it was on reflection, a fair one.

Final Score Dereham 3 Mundford 3

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - SAM LONG (Some great passes)

20 Jan 08 -  Watton Vs Mundford

The U9s dominated from the outset at home against Watton and really could have scored a lot more goals with a little bit more care in front of goal. They took the lead after numerous chances went begging when Liam Aspin calmly slotted home. Almost straight away Ryan Harvey was on hand to make it two and just before half time a John Pearce effort and a Watton own goal made it 4-0 at the break. Pearce added his second soon after the restart before Aspin turned on the style to get himself 3 more goals. Watton rallied and stand in keeper Harry Walker made a great save but was powerless to stop the rebound being slotted home. Sam Long played some intelligent passes throughout and from one Joe Ziphel pass strode through for a lovely goal.

Final Score Watton 1 Mundford 9

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - HARRY WALKER (Solid display)

13 Jan 08 -  Thetford Vs Mundford

The boys enjoyed a comfortable victory over a very young Thetford side who appear to be progressing well. On a very windy day some good football was played at times by Mundford and the home keeper made several great stops to keep the score line down. Liam Aspin, Ryan Harvey and Luke De Meyer all helped themselves to hat tricks, whilst Joe Zipfel enjoyed his return to his former club with 2 good finishes. Harry Walker completed the scoring with a lovely strike from an acute angle.

Final Score Thetford 0 Mundford 12

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH DEAN SCOTT (Kept it simple)

6 Jan 08 -  Lakenheath Vs Mundford

The under 9s started the 2nd half of their season with a solid display away at Lakenheath. The boys were soon in their stride and Ryan Harvey showed his clinical finishing with 2 early strikes before a long Lakenheath free kick was neatly flicked home to pull a goal a back for the home side. This encouraged them and Mundford had to rely on Ben Wells in goal for some good stops, however the balance was restored when Harvey nipped in to grab his hat trick. This enabled Mundford to get back on top and from a John Pearce throw in Harry Walker flicked on for Sam Long to finish in the corner. Soon after a loose clearance was pounced upon by Long who smashed it home from 20 yards. The second half continued in much the same vain as Lakenheath had their share of the play but Mundford always carried a greater threat and once again Harvey, who's work rate and movement was excellent, stole in to make it 6-1. John Pearce produced a really non stop performance throughout and continually was the man breaking up attacks and picking up loose balls all day and his run saw the ball run through to Sam Long who's low finish brought him a rare hat tick. Lakenheath then had a little spell as Mundford's work rate dropped a little and the excellent Ben Wells made several great saves as he produced his best performance of the season so far. As the game neared its end Mundford's extra quality showed through again as Joe Zipfel neatly found Liam Aspin who finished well, and just before the end Aspin turned and hit a beauty into the far corner

Final Score Lakenheath 1 Mundford 9

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - JOHN PEARCE (Dominant throughout)

16 Dec 07 -  Cringleford Vs Mundford (League)

After suffering their first defeat last season the under 9s bounced back with a far more dominant and powerful display against the side that inflicted that loss. Mundford gave a debut to Jo Zipfel who deputised for the ill Dean Scott and he made a solid start as they were sharp out of the blocks, and it was no surprise when Ryan Harvey was on hand to put them ahead. Numerous chances were created as Mundford continued to dominate but on a rare breakaway Ben Wells pushed out a Cringleford shot only for the rebound to be finished for a scarcely deserved equalizer. Just before half time John Pearce crashed a shot against the post as the boys and their supporters wondered how they were only level at half time. From the restart the lead was regained when a mazy dribble by Liam Aspin saw him smash in a shot from an acute angle and soon after Harveys predatory instincts came to the fore as he was on hand to finish a loose ball. Cringleford battled back and made it 3-2 and started to apply some pressure but found Sam Long, Zipfel and Harry Walker in resilient form at the back. From a clearance Harvey outpaced the home defence to net his hat trick but once again Cringleford soon reduced the arrears. However the result was sealed with the goal of the game as Liam Aspin drove forward with the ball, drew the defence then played a defence splitting pass to Ryan Harvey who strolled past the keeper for a beautiful goal.

Final Score Cringleford 3 Mundford 5

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - JOHN PEARCE (The enforcer enforced)

9 Dec 07 -  Cringleford Vs Mundford (KO Trophy Quarter Final)

After a season and a half the under 9s finally suffered a defeat and really they can have no complaints as Cringleford were far hungrier and basically looked better at both ends of the pitch. Although Mundford took the lead against the run of play when Liam Aspin shot through a crowd of players, they were soon on the back foot again and some slack play throughout the entire team saw Cringleford players continually running free and taking their chances which saw them into a 3-1 lead. Just before the break Mundford got a ray of hope as Ryan Harvey headed home a John Pearce's corner. The 2nd half failed to see the expected rally and the lack of urgency in many situations really held the side back and Cringleford took control to go 6-3 up. Harvey again pulled one back when he finished a terrific run from a pass from Harry Walker but the scoring was completed  when another Cringleford shot ended up in the back of the net.

Final Score-Cringleford 7 Mundford 3

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - RYAN HARVEY (Best of a poor bunch)

25 Nov 07 - Mundford Vs New Buckenham

The Under 9s started slowly at home Vs New Buckenham and although having the bulk of possession and territory they struggled to carve out many chances, although when they did the Buckenham keeper made some good stops. Eventually Ryan Harvey scored to put the home side ahead at the break. Soon after the restart Liam Aspin went on a 30 yard run beating several opponents before slotting home a lovely goal. Harvey then got a deserved second as Mundford started to dominate. Once again Aspin picked the ball up in midfield and drove through the New Buckenham side and as he went around the keeper up popped John`Poacher`Pearce to nick the goal off him. Aspin got his reward though minutes later with a cool finish for the fifth goal and the scoring was completed when Luke de Meyer was on hand in the penalty box to grab himself 2 goals.

Final Score Mundford 7 New Buckenham 0

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - RYAN HARVEY (Work rate getting better and better)

18 Nov 07 - Brandon Vs Mundford

A good local derby played in a great spirit saw the Mundford boys at last get out of the blocks quickly and from many opening chances Liam Aspin slotted home the opener. In a rare breakaway Brandon caught the boys out and Dean Scott pulled down Olly Farthing just outside the box, the same player then drove home a good free kick for the equalizer. Mundford soon got on the front foot and Ryan Harvey showed good close control to turn and finish in style. He then repeated the dose just before half time for a 3-1 half time lead.  Playing into a strong wind after the break Mundford found themselves pegged back but Dean Scott ably assisted by Harry Walker in his new found`Claude Makele`role, snubbed the majority of the home sides attacks out. On the rare occasions they did get through Ben Wells was always equal to the task. Mundford always looked bright and threatening on the counter attack and late on Liam Aspins mazy run was brought to an end by a foul and up stepped John Pearce to smash home a tremendous free kick.

Final Score Brandon 1 Mundford 4

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - DEAN SCOTT (Calm and assured)

11 Nov 07 - Harling Vs Mundford

Harling grabbed an early lead with a fine finish from an acute angle. Once again Mundford created endless chances which this season they seem unable to take with either a poor finish or a final pass just not being seen or ignored. The Harling keeper produced an assured performance throughout to keep his side ahead at the break. Straight from the kick off Liam Aspin dribbled his way through the entire team to score a delightful goal, almost straight away Aspin put Mundford ahead. Harry Walkers battling play in midfield enabled the ball to fall to Aspin who grabbed a deserved hat trick. As has happened so often this season the boys thought they had done enough and 2 quick goals brought Harling level. John Pearce then started some of his driving runs that have been seen so often this season as Mundford fought once again to get on top. A loose clearance fell to Ryan Harvey who drilled home a fine shot. Harling came back and Ben Wells made an instinctive save to his left and Dean Scott's last ditch challenge kept the boys ahead. Harvey and Pearce created problems for the home defence and Aspin was on hand to make it 5-3 which looked like that would seal it, but full credit to Harling who would not give up and 2 late goals gave them a draw that they probably did deserve.

Final score Harling 5 Mundford 5

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - JOHN PEARCE (Powerful runs)

28 Oct 07 - Wymondham Vs Mundford

Mundford U9s dominated the early play away to Wymondham on a wet and windy day but they were unable to find a way past the impressive home keeper and on a rare breakaway, Wymondham took the lead. This rocked Mundford and the play up to the break was scrappy and they had to rely on an outstanding save from keeper Ben Wells to stay 1 down. The second half saw the away side playing into a strong wind and this seemed to enable them to put some more moves together with Sam Long and John Pearce getting a grip in midfield and from one of Harry Walkers run allowed Ryan Harvey's shot to skid past the keeper. Soon after a misplaced header from a Wymondham defender sailed in to put Mundford ahead. This looked like being the winner until Wymondham grabbed an equalizer from a penalty after an innocuous challenge but Mundford came roaring back and totally dominated the last 5 minutes. Chances went begging again as Harvey grazed the post twice and Liam Aspin was denied by a last gasp challenge.

Final Score Wymondham 2 Mundford 2

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - SAM LONG (Solid display)

21 Oct 07 - Mundford Vs Bulldogs

Mundford U9s entertained Bulldogs in a league match. An excellent advantage by the ref allowed Ryan Harveys mazy run to set up John Pearce for an early lead before Harry Walker notched the second. Bulldogs however, showed some strong battling qualities and soon pulled one back. Harvey finished coolly for Mundford but again Bulldogs hit back just after the break when Ben Wells just failed in vain to stop a deflected shot go over the line. But then Liam Aspin took control and his clinical finishing saw him grab 6 goals. Harvey got a deserved hat trick and with Pearce finishing the scoring this was a result that a gallant Bulldogs side didn't really deserve.

Final Score Mundford 12 Bulldogs 2

OPPOSITION'S MAN OF THE MATCH - RYAN HARVEY (Top passing and moving)

Mundford U9s hosted Feltwell and were involved in a tremendous match. Mundford got caught out early on and were soon a goal down, however they soon got into their rhythm and a Ryan Harvey shot ricocheted into the path of Liam Aspin who levelled. Just before half time John Pearce burst through to put Mundford ahead from an acute angle. The second half was end to end stuff with Feltwell's keeper and Ben Wells producing good stops. Despite carving out numerous great openings the final pass or clinical finish was alluding the home side and they were punished when Feltwell levelled things. Dean Scott then cleared off the line before Sam Long went close with a header, but despite mounting pressure from Mundford near the end they had to be content with a draw in a match that was a credit to both sides.

The domination continued and Stand in keeper Walker was largely untroubled although from one Dereham attack Aspin grabbed his fourth when he picked up a loose ball and dribbled through for a great goal. 23 Sept 07 - Mundford Vs Watton

The Under 9s hosted a hard working Watton side who certainly made things tough for the first 15 minutes of this game. Mundford struggled to get into any sort of rhythm until eventually Ryan Harvey popped up to put them ahead. Soon after John Pearce was on hand to increase the lead before Liam Aspin and then Harvey again made it a slightly flattering 4-0 interval lead. The second half saw Ben Wells make a terrific save at an opponents feet after Watton managed to get past Dean Scott on a rare occasion. But Mundford, with the immense work rate of Pearce and the classy passing of Sam Long, got well on top and allowed Aspin and Harvey to create endless chances which Watton were struggling to contain. A lovely cross from Harvey saw Aspin touch home with his chest, then Pearce thumped home the sixth goal. Harry Walker replaced Long and provided some menacing runs down the right and his cross was finished by Aspin for his hat trick before Walker himself finished in style. Watton grabbed a goal back when goalie Wells and a Watton attacker both arrived at a loose ball at the same time and the ball spun free for an easy tap in.
